Every player at the 2026 World Cup has already been scanned. Standing still, in 360 degrees, mapped down to the shape of their muscles and the size of their boots, accurate to one or two millimeters. All of it before a single ball was kicked.
That scan is the centerpiece of what may be the most heavily instrumented sporting event ever staged. The video assistant referee (VAR) has been around for years. So has semi-automated offside technology. But the World Cup tech rolling out across all 104 matches this summer pushes both further than soccer, or frankly any major sport, has gone before.
The pitch will be thick with cameras and sensors. And for the first time, the people in the video room won't be squinting at a generic stick-figure avatar of each athlete. They'll have a digital double.
What FIFA is actually trying to fix
The pitch is simple enough: referees make mistakes. Ask any fan who's watched a goal wiped out by a call they couldn't see and still can't accept. The promise of all this hardware is to swap a subjective judgment for something closer to objective fact.
Mostly that means the big stuff. Was a striker offside on the play that decided the match? Did a defender's arm actually touch the ball in the box? Those are the moments worth pausing the game for.
Still, teams can request a look at smaller incidents too, and that's where it gets philosophically messy. As WIRED reported, it raises a real question about what this technology is for. Is the value in catching the howlers that warp a tournament? Or in litigating whether a knee was an inch over a line nobody could ever see in real time?
FIFA's answer, more or less, is both. The governing body wants the obvious blunders gone. It also insists the inches count. Which, if you've ever watched a goal disallowed by the width of a shoelace, you may find either reassuring or maddening. Possibly both at once.
The eyes and the ball
The foundation is optical tracking, and Hawk-Eye is running it again. Its computer vision picks up more than two dozen skeletal points on every player, constantly, throughout the match. The upgrade from 2022 is the camera count: 16 high-resolution units this time, up from 12, according to FIFA innovation director Johannes Holzmüller.
Then there's the ball, which is quietly the most interesting piece of gear on the field.
Kinexon, a sports wearables firm, is supplying the brain inside the match ball for a second straight World Cup. This version carries an ultrawide-band sensor plus an IMU setup, meaning an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The gyroscope matters more than it sounds. It captures spin, which a plain location tracker would miss entirely. All told, the system logs the ball's position and every distinct touch 500 times a second.
The clever bit is where they put it. Back in 2022, the sensor floated in the dead center of the ball, held in place by a string sling that Adidas designed. This year Adidas built a small bladder along the inner wall of the ball, and the sensor sits there instead.
"That vulcanization is just way more stable than those strings," said Kinexon cofounder Maximillian Schmidt, noting that the old hooks could snap. The whole rig weighs 13 grams.
Moving the sensor off-center created its own headache. Put weight on one side of a sphere and it wants to wobble in flight, so Schmidt's team had to counterbalance and recalibrate to keep tracking even no matter how the ball was struck. And because the sensor now sits where a player might boot it directly, they ran it through tougher impact testing. A ball that fails mid-match is not a footnote at a World Cup.
The digital twin, explained
Here's the genuinely new idea. Lenovo, a FIFA tech partner, ran every player through that high-resolution body scan in the run-up to the tournament. The results get fed into Hawk-Eye, where they replace the generic avatars officials leaned on before.
Art Hu, Lenovo's global chief innovation officer, describes the precision as roughly an order of magnitude beyond an ordinary avatar. Body shape, muscle tone, even shoe size, all captured to within a millimeter or two.
Full-body scanning itself, Hu is quick to point out, isn't exotic. Plenty of industries use it. The hard part is what comes after.
Think about it. The scan is taken once, with the player standing perfectly still. The game is the opposite of still. Players sprint, leap, twist, slide in studs-first. So the actual engineering challenge is taking that frozen, perfect model and mapping it onto Hawk-Eye's live skeletal data while a body is in violent motion. The twin has to bend the way the real player bends, in real time.
Getting those last few inches of accuracy costs an enormous amount of computing power and a stack of algorithms working in concert. The payoff is an offside line drawn not against a cartoon but against a faithful copy of the actual human being.
Where the humans still fit
None of this retires the referee. There are still flesh-and-blood officials on the grass and in the booth, making the calls in the moment. The tech is the appeals court, not the trial. When a decision gets challenged, officials turn to the data to confirm or overturn what the eye decided.
That balance is doing a lot of quiet work. A fully automated referee would be technically closer than most fans realize, but soccer clearly isn't ready to hand the whistle to a server rack. Keeping a person in the loop preserves the feel of the game while the machines handle the measuring.
What to watch when the whistle blows
The interesting drama this summer won't only be on the scoreboard. It'll be in how the inches play out.
A more precise system means more goals will be measurable to the millimeter, and that cuts both ways. Fewer robbed teams, sure. But also more goals erased by margins so fine they feel like a technicality, celebrated and then deleted thirty seconds later. The World Cup tech can tell you the truth to within a millimeter. It can't tell you whether anyone enjoys watching a great goal die over a sliver of a shoulder.
There's a longer arc here too. If the digital-twin approach holds up across 104 matches under real pressure, expect it to spread fast: into domestic leagues, other sports, anywhere a contested line decides money and trophies. Remember the 2022 ball sensor? It turned up everywhere after its debut. This will likely follow.
For now, the question is simpler. When the first big call gets overturned by a scan of a player's left boot, will fans trust the twin? We're about to find out, one disputed inch at a time.
