But it also compresses perceived time, making a session feel shorter and snappier. That's why hyper-casual games with thirty-second levels often use frenetic tracks pushing 140 BPM or higher. You're not just energised. You're temporally compressed, burning through rounds without registering how many you've played.

Fast music doesn't make you feel like you're playing less. It makes each round feel brief, which keeps you starting the next one.

Why This Actually Matters to You

If you've ever looked up from a mobile game and felt vaguely cheated by the clock, this is probably part of the reason. The sensation isn't a flaw in your timekeeping. It's a designed outcome.

And here's the part worth sitting with: knowing the mechanic doesn't fully defuse it. Entrainment is automatic. You can't consciously opt out the way you can close a notification. But you can create friction. Playing with the sound off removes the tempo variable entirely, and sessions will likely feel shorter. Some players find that preferable. Others find the silence kills the experience, which tells you something about how load-bearing the music actually is.

There's also a simpler check. If a session consistently feels much longer than it measures, mute the game for one session and compare. If the felt duration snaps back toward the actual duration, you've just caught the studio's hand in your clock.
