It's past midnight. You can't sleep, and the router on the shelf is putting on a show: slow pulse, frantic strobe, two seconds of nothing, then chaos again. Your first instinct is that something's broken. That instinct is wrong.
Every blink is a packet. Thousands of them, moving in and out of your home every minute, even when you think nothing is happening.
The thing most people get completely wrong
Here's a belief worth killing: blinking means something is wrong. It doesn't. Blinking means the router is working. A router sitting completely dark and still is the one that should worry you.
The lights on a typical home router fall into a few categories. Power (solid, usually green or white). The WAN or internet port, which shows your connection to your ISP's infrastructure. Individual LAN ports for wired devices. And a Wi-Fi indicator, sometimes split into 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Each one reports something specific.
The internet light blinking slowly and steadily? That's your router exchanging keepalive signals with your ISP, tiny handshakes that say "still here, still connected." That light going dark and then solid again? Your router just lost the upstream connection and renegotiated it. That one is worth noticing.
What a single blink actually represents
A network packet is a small chunk of data, typically between 64 bytes and 1,500 bytes on a standard home network. When you load a webpage, your device doesn't receive one big file. It receives hundreds of individual packets, each traveling separately and reassembled at the destination.
Every time the activity LED blinks, it's registering a burst of those packets crossing the router's processor. The light can't fire for every single packet (the blink would be imperceptibly short), so what you're seeing is the LED catching up: a visible flicker representing dozens or hundreds of packet events in a fraction of a second. Like a seismograph needle that can only draw so fast.
Say you're streaming a video in one room while someone else downloads a game update in another. Your router is simultaneously receiving compressed video data from a content delivery server, breaking it into packets, forwarding it to your TV over the 5 GHz band, receiving large data chunks for the game, queuing them, managing download speed so neither device starves the other, and sending acknowledgment packets back upstream for everything it receives. That frantic blinking during a big download isn't a warning sign. It's the router at full sprint.
The invisible traffic you never initiated
This is the part most guides skip entirely.
Your router blinks at 2 AM when you're asleep and every device seems off. Why? Because they're not really off. A smart TV polls its update server every few hours. Your phone, even on the nightstand, checks push notification servers roughly every few minutes. A smart speaker sends a heartbeat signal to its cloud service constantly. A laptop in sleep mode still maintains a network lease and occasionally refreshes it.
Take a two-device household: one smartphone and one laptop, both "idle." In a single hour, those two devices can generate several hundred small packets between background app refreshes, DNS lookups, network time protocol syncs, and operating system telemetry. The router handles all of it silently, logging nothing you'll ever see.
This is why the WAN light almost never fully stops blinking. Your home is always talking, even when you aren't.
Reading the specific patterns (and when to actually worry)
Not all blink patterns are equal. A rough field guide:
Slow, rhythmic blink on the internet light: Normal idle state. Connection is live, keepalives are exchanging. Leave it alone.
Rapid sustained flash on the activity or WAN light: Active data transfer. Someone or something is moving a lot of data. Check if a device is running a background update.
Internet light solid amber or red: Your router has power and is functional, but it cannot reach your ISP's network. This is where you actually restart things.
All lights cycling sequentially in a pattern: The router is booting or running a firmware update. Do not unplug it. Seriously. Interrupting a firmware flash can brick the device.
The light that won't stop blinking after you disconnect every device: Your router is talking to the internet on its own, which is normal (those keepalives), but if you've verified no devices are connected and the activity light is still going berserk, log into the admin panel and check what's happening.

The reboot that actually fixes things (and why)
Restarting a router works not because it's magic, but because of something called a connection state table. Your router maintains a running record of every active network session: which internal device is talking to which external server, on which port, right now.
